Message from the Commissioner
Kia ora! If you’ve visited our website recently you would have seen our colourful consultation page. Last month we commenced our review of dispute resolution services. We’re excited to be trying different ways to get views from the community about dispute resolution services. We have really enjoyed our co-design workshops and working alongside the community to build great processes.
In this month’s update, we share some highlights from our annual report and explain the outcome of our litigation activity. We also give an update on where we are at with our Dispute Resolution Services review and provide a summary of outreach work related to the Christchurch event and the launch of New Zealand’s cyber strategy.

Our 2019 Annual Report
Keeping .nz fair was the key focus for 2018/19.
Our year in numbers looked like this:
- Our Contact Centre resolved more than 1700 enquiries. Typical enquiries were from frustrated consumers who haven’t been able to reach their service provider or have lost control of their domain name.
- Our real-time feedback from our customer interactions over the year had a satisfaction rating of 84%.
- Together with the industry we suspended or cancelled more than 5000 domain names for invalid details
- And we had more than 24 formal disputes heard through our disputes resolution process.
The Domain Name Commission has had its court order upheld by a higher Court in its US lawsuit against the company DomainTools. “The decision strengthens our commitment to protect the privacy rights of .nz registrants. It sends a message to all companies dealing with registrants’ personal information online to be compliant with privacy requirements”, says the Domain Name Commissioner, Brent Carey.

Dispute resolution service review
We need your views!
We are changing things up and are interested in your opinion. This is a first-principles review of our dispute resolution services.
We are also consulting in different ways to try and gather as many views as possible. You can send us your thoughts by email or post, complete a short 5-10 minute survey or participate in our online Mural board.
You will also find us at the annual national mediation conference in Christchurch 1-3 August.
We are sponsoring the event and will have our survey available for completion to gather attendees views.
We’ve also been trying new things to get community views. We’ve held some very successful co-design workshops with people. Here are some pictures of our achievements building processes together.

Post Christchurch terrorism event workshop
The DNCL and InternetNZ attended a post-Christchurch terrorism event workshop facilitated by the Department of Internal Affairs Digital Safety Office.
The workshop was an opportunity to hear from agencies like NetSafe, internet service providers and the Chief Censor about coordination efforts and safety initiatives pre and post the Christchurch event.
Launch of the Cyber Security Strategy
The Domain Name Commission has been participating in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s cyber security strategy review. The strategy was recently launched by the Minister of Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media Kris Faafoi.

Did you know?
Registrars and their resellers must pass on the identifying number of a registrant ( a UDAI) to Registrants on request and whenever a new UDAI is generated, free of charge.
The UDAI must also be provided to registrants on request. If the registrar fails to provide a UDAI to the Registrant, DNCL may also step in to help the registrant out.
Neither the releasing Registrar nor the Registry is entitled to charge any fees for the transfer of a domain name.Links and media
