You have sought comments on the proposal to allow “bank.nz” as a domain extension.
I support the proposal with one key requirement. Registration should be confined to registered
banks with the Reserve Bank. This would give users of banks' internet services some comfort
that they were dealing with bona fide banks, and help reduce the ability of scammers to gain
illegal access to customers' bank account details.
I appreciate this would not protect users against scams from overseas predators, but at least it
would provide some protection for NZ bank customers that if they received email requests
from NZ registered banks, they are more likely than not to be genuine.
By way of background, I am a former CEO of the NZ Bankers Association, and former
Minister of Commerce.
